Overview

Smith Construction was appointed as Main Contractor by North Kesteven District Council to deliver the full design and build of the new Sleaford Moor Enterprise Park. This £9.5 million development plays a key role in supporting local business growth and promoting sustainable construction practices in Lincolnshire.

Project Scope

The project included the complete development of the enterprise park from the ground up:

15 Commercial Units – Full design, construction, and erection of energy-efficient units suitable for a range of businesses.

Infrastructure & External Works – This included site stabilisation, road and sewer construction, and tarmac works, all built to adoptable standards for Highways and Anglian Water.

Sustainability Measures –

EV charging points

Green living wall feature for natural insulation and aesthetic appeal

Solar panels installed on unit roofs

A+ EPC rating awarded for each unit

Smith Construction proudly showcased its full-service capabilities while supporting the local economy as a Lincolnshire-based business employing local people.

Outcome

The Sleaford Moor Enterprise Park is a prime example of how sustainable construction and local investment can go hand in hand. The high-spec units and eco-conscious features provide a long-lasting foundation for business growth, while the site infrastructure ensures long-term usability and compliance with key environmental standards.

This project cements Smith Construction’s reputation for delivering large-scale, future-focused commercial developments with integrity and impact.

A key priority for the Council is to support a strong local economy in North Kesteven; including providing space for businesses to start and grow, or to move in and make the District their new home, and the creation of new jobs. Sleaford Moor Enterprise Park is that priority in action.
The Council bought the site after the private sector failed to bring it forwards, designed the development, and now phase one is complete and home to a range of businesses with initial preparations being made for phase two.
Smith Construction were committed to the scheme and these principles behind it from the very beginning – while contractual, delivery of phase one of the scheme has felt like a genuine partnership.
The team were professional and solutions-focused throughout development, including re-jigging the initial works programme in order to meet a specific deadline that arose during construction.Smith Construction also worked in harmony with our other contractor onsite, Harlaxton Engineering, to deliver a high build quality throughout phase one and took a positive approach to engaging with statutory and other stakeholders to minimise any issues.
The final result is a smart development with a high build standard and a range of features which make it stand out, from spacious and quality units with energy-saving features and EV chargers to the attractive landscape around them including native planting and a green wall to the front of the site.

The development demonstrates not only the Council’s commitment to the economy and building better for the environment, but shows what could similarly be achieved for other new-build commercial sites. The Smith Construction Team’s dedication, understanding and hard work is a key component of this success.

Overview

Smith Construction was appointed to revitalise the heart of Sleaford through a carefully considered regeneration project. Backed by a £1 million Government grant for economic renewal, the transformation of Sleaford Market Place focused on preserving heritage while creating a vibrant and welcoming public space for the local community.

Project Scope

The project involved extensive works to elevate the space both visually and functionally:

Paving Works – Full refresh of the Market Place and surrounding footpaths using high-quality Yorkstone and Sandstone Setts, selected to complement the area’s historical character.

Heritage Resin Detailing – A maple gold resin surround was installed at the war memorial, enhancing its prominence while maintaining aesthetic sensitivity.

Landscaping & Street Furniture – Smiths constructed two raised planting beds, introduced new wooden benches and bike stands, and carried out broader soft landscaping to increase the site’s appeal and usability.

Lighting Enhancements – Subtle, atmospheric lighting installations were added along the frontage to create a safe and attractive evening environment.

Outcome

This regeneration project has restored the Market Place as a central hub for community gatherings and economic activity. Smith Construction’s attention to detail and respect for the area’s history have ensured a space that is not only functional and attractive but also full of local pride.

The enhancements support local footfall, improve accessibility, and offer a refreshed setting that encourages events, markets, and civic life to thrive once again in the centre of Sleaford.

Smith Construction is a valued partner and we particularly applaud it for the professional pride its teams demonstrated throughout the Market Place pedestrianisation works last year in Sleaford.

As a local company headquartered in Heckington, and with much of its workforce also hailing from the local area, it was clear that Smith Construction not only understood the scheme but also saw the importance of delivering it to the high standard the Council expected and that the town deserved.
Following a thorough tender process, which saw Smith Construction emerge as the successful contractor to deliver the works, its team was able to offer a full range of pre-works advice and assistance. This included helping to identify a completion date that was both feasible physically, given the detailed public realm improvements which formed the scheme including new planters, repaving, uplighting and infrastructure including benches and bike racks, but which also focused on completing the works and handing the space back as soon as possible.
The personal Smith Construction touch was extended from every level, from those teams working on the ground through to the consistent daily presence of onsite management and its Managing Director Ken who visited site often and was on-hand personally throughout.
The team recognised the wide range of stakeholders involved, including liaising directly with the surrounding businesses and venues to minimise impact of the works. This ranged from practical considerations for the surrounding businesses, including when paths and areas outside doorways needed to be repaved as part of the scheme, through to arranging final window cleaning and making good for those businesses facing the site.
When unexpected snow and below 0 temperatures impacted on work, the Smith Construction team added extra resource and worked additional hours to minimise the delay and hand back the majority of the Market Place in time for a community celebration we were organising for late December.
The quality of their work is evident in the finish that can be seen onsite, with additional guarantee in the form of post-work checks and a snagging period during which few faults were found.
Sleaford’s Market Place is now a multi-functional space suitable for events, markets and community activities, plus dedicated Blue Badge parking on set days and times which was not the case before. The design and materials work hand-in-hand with the build quality by Smith Construction to better reflect the historic buildings and features surrounding it including St Denys’ Church, the War Memorial and Bristol Fountain as well as quality shops and cafes in the immediate area. It has seen success as a rejuvenated public space across a number of events so far this year, with more planned including RiverLight Festival 2025 and potential for community-led activities on the space.
We’d like to thank Smith Construction and all of its teams for their hard work.

A new 3G football pitch has been completed and unveiled at Wyke Community Sports Village in Bradford. The new facility will provide “all weather” use for training and football matches, thanks to its modern artificial grass surface.

Smith Construction, appointed by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, led the manufacture, supply and installation of the sports field. The delivery of the state-of-the-art pitch forms part of the £6 million sports village project, built on the site of a former school in Wyke.

Measuring 106m x 70m, the new 3G artificial grass pitch is certified under the FIFA Quality Programme. Funded via the Football Foundation Framework, it will enable the community to access a high standard football surface throughout the year. The Football Foundation is a charity set up by the Premier League, The FA and Government to help provide outstanding grassroots football facilities.

Smith Construction ensured the new surface met the expectations of Bradford Council and will delight local users. Through the selection of top-quality materials, expert manufacturing and meticulous installation, the pitch is set to host football clubs in Wyke and surrounding areas for years to come.

Local team Wyke Wanderers AFC will be one of the beneficiaries and were among the first to test the new pitch. On Saturday 9th July, they played their first pre-season game on the surface in a friendly match against Pool FC.

Club Secretary Dave Ryan enthused, “What a treat! The surface is great to play on and all the players enjoyed the experience. We’ve played on a number of similar surfaces, but everyone agrees this is the best so far. We can’t wait to play on it regularly.”

Indeed, this latest football arena represents one of the crowning features of Bradford Council’s Wyke Community Sports Village project, which was first approved in 2016 and opened in spring 2022. Replacing the redundant Wyke Manor School building, the sports site also features a cycling track, pavilion, all-weather pitch and two additional grass sports pitches.
