A new 3G football pitch has been completed and unveiled at Wyke Community Sports Village in Bradford. The new facility will provide “all weather” use for training and football matches, thanks to its modern artificial grass surface.
Smith Construction, appointed by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, led the manufacture, supply and installation of the sports field. The delivery of the state-of-the-art pitch forms part of the £6 million sports village project, built on the site of a former school in Wyke.
Measuring 106m x 70m, the new 3G artificial grass pitch is certified under the FIFA Quality Programme. Funded via the Football Foundation Framework, it will enable the community to access a high standard football surface throughout the year. The Football Foundation is a charity set up by the Premier League, The FA and Government to help provide outstanding grassroots football facilities.
Smith Construction ensured the new surface met the expectations of Bradford Council and will delight local users. Through the selection of top-quality materials, expert manufacturing and meticulous installation, the pitch is set to host football clubs in Wyke and surrounding areas for years to come.
Local team Wyke Wanderers AFC will be one of the beneficiaries and were among the first to test the new pitch. On Saturday 9th July, they played their first pre-season game on the surface in a friendly match against Pool FC.
Club Secretary Dave Ryan enthused, “What a treat! The surface is great to play on and all the players enjoyed the experience. We’ve played on a number of similar surfaces, but everyone agrees this is the best so far. We can’t wait to play on it regularly.”
Indeed, this latest football arena represents one of the crowning features of Bradford Council’s Wyke Community Sports Village project, which was first approved in 2016 and opened in spring 2022. Replacing the redundant Wyke Manor School building, the sports site also features a cycling track, pavilion, all-weather pitch and two additional grass sports pitches.
