Staveley Miners FC, Chesterfield

Staveley Miners Welfare Football Club had experienced storm water flooding of their natural grass stadia pitch for some time. The solution was to have a new 3G pitch installed which would give the opportunity of playing football matches in all weather conditions and being able to utilise the pitch for many more playing hours for the club members.

The stadia was transformed in 2021 with a new sustainable drainage system beneath the new 3G turf surface to meet the FA performance criteria. The 3G system was developed further to enhance both the player performance and the long-term performance of the carpet. Limonta’s Duo shape 50 3G surface was selected for its superb properties. The clubs’ logo was installed in the new playing surface to add to the unique qualities of the install.

Smith construction installed the newly surfaced spectator surrounds and paths along with all hardstanding areas. The existing floodlight system was replaced by a new LED state of the art lighting system which is designed to perform at 250 lux illumination and offer many environmental benefits and cost savings on the previous system.

On completion of the sports project, Smith Construction were invited to return to design and construct a new club car park. This was in addition to the original contract and was completed on time and on budget.

Project – Design and construction of 3G Stadia Football Pitch

Client – Staveley Miners Welfare FC

Value – £850,000

Period – December 2021

As the Estate manager of a relatively small Prep school, I was tasked with helping our Director of Finance & Operations to deliver an all-weather pitch into our already stunning grounds. From the moment of first meeting Ken and Hannah, they inspired confidence and had a passion for their work. To build a pitch in the side of the north downs was no mean feat, not only do we sit in the Green belt, a conservation area and an area of outstanding natural beauty, but also the amount of ground works required to achieve this was quite unbelievable. If that wasn’t enough, a small detail of Covid 19 came along! During this uncertain time Ken and his wonderful team stepped up and still created a stunning pitch that sits beautifully within our grounds. I cannot speak highly enough of Smith’s, they have repaid our faith in them, with what can only be described as a stunning pitch, not only that, it seems to get better with time. Thank you Ken, and your team. You are a credit to British civil engineering.
